The Old Sacramento Scavenger Hunt is not just an adventure game, it is an exceptional walking tour.
As you use the scavenger hunt to tour Sacramento's historic district, you will be taken to a series of Old Sacramento historic attractions. Many of these are in plain sight, but the significance of their history is missed by the casual visitor. In fact, thousands of people walk right by these historic treasures each year without realizing their contribution to Sacramento, Gold Rush, and Transcontinental Railroad history.
Although not every attraction on the list plays an active role in both scavenger hunts, the route of each hunt will bring you past these historic monuments, buildings, and amazing places.
The Pony Express Statue -
Located on second street in Old Sacramento, the Pony Express Statue marks the western terminus of the Pony Express Trail. A couple of hundred feet from this site is the Old Sacramento Visitors Center - staged in the original Pony Express Office.
The Wells Fargo Museum -
Before they were into online banking and ATM machines, this bank traded cash for gold and managed an overland stage. Be sure to step inside the Wells Fargo Museum and take a peek at the 1860 era copy machine.
The Sacramento Union -
A Gold Rush era newspaper and company that once employed Mark Twain.
The Arcade Hotel -
If you were visiting Old Sacramento, you could stay at the Arcade Hotel. Now this building plays a role in the iPhone version of the hunt.
The Theodore Judah Monument -
Theodore Judah was the engineering genius behind the first railroad to cross the Sierra's to connect the east and west coasts of the United States by rail.
The Old Schoolhouse Museum -
Find out what attending school in the mid to late eighteenth century was like. The Old Schoolhouse Museum is a must see attraction in Old Sacramento.
The Sacramento Waterfront -
Both the pdf and iPhone version of the Old Sacramento Scavenger Hunt bring you to the waterfront, but only the iPhone uses a clue from the Wells Fargo Museum to reveal the location of an archaeological artifact that often surprises lifetime residents of Northern California.
The Delta King -
A nice place to stay on the waterfront. If you download the free Old Sacramento Scavenger Hunt, your kids will have fun deciding just how many flagpoles are on the deck.
The Central Pacific Railroad Ticket Office -
Imagine it is the late 1800's and you have a train to catch. You will have fun peeking in the "train cage" to see the "tiger train" that the folks at the California State Railroad Museum have locked up...
The Huntington and Hopkins Hardware Store Museum -
The coolest little museum in Sacramento, in our humble opinion. Of course, they are our neighbors so we are a little biased. This gem of a find is often missed by visitors and tourists. Both the iPhone app and free hunt will show you exactly where the Huntington and Hopkins Hardware Store Museum is located.
The Mechanics Exchange Building -
Global headquarters of Trailmix.Net, creators of the Educational Expeditions series of learning adventures and other fun products - like
The Rock of the Month Club, for example.
